Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) is a 26-episode mecha anime. It’s set in the futuristic fortified city of Tokyo-3, 15 years after a cataclysmic world event killed more than 2 billion people. Teenager Shinji is recruited to pilot an Evangelion, a giant biomechanical mecha, to fight monstrous beings known as Angels hell bent on destroying humanity. 

Evangelion has had a profound cultural impact since its debut. It popularised many character archetypes in anime and revitalised the mech genre with new depths. It redefined Japanese culture and has influenced much in the way of modern media, being one of the most  enduring franchises of all time, permeating popular culture in a variety of mediums to this very day.
